-- Changes in elected leadership and the future of education is topic of discussion

January 9, 2002 (New Brunswick, NJ) – Experts from New Jersey businesses, institutions of higher education, statewide advocacy organizations, and the New Jersey Department of Education gathered yesterday evening to discuss the future of standards-based education in the state. The discussion, entitled Leadership Transitions in Public Education: Moving Ahead with NJ’s Standards, was co-sponsored by New Jersey United for Higher School Standards, www.njserves.org, and The Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Francis L. “New Jersey United is pleased to give the public the opportunity to discuss the future of education in New Jersey as a new administration takes over,” said New Jersey United Co-Chair Arthur Ryan, chairman and CEO, Prudential Financial. “Discussions such as this evening’s are crucial to ensuring that a broad range of education stakeholders continue their participation in our standards-based public education system.”

“The success of our state and nation in the competitive world markets of the future depends significantly on the steps we take now to provide and maintain an atmosphere of academic excellence for our schoolchildren,” Dr. Lawrence said. “Programs such as this contribute to that effort by serving as an open forum, a place for our citizens to discuss key issues and ask questions of members of the business community, colleges and universities, local schools, and the State Department of Education. I congratulate Art Ryan and those who worked with him to bring this program to the people of New Jersey."
